Few things come with as much pressure as playing music professionally.

We spend years in music school. Miles driving from gig to gig. And countless hours in the practice room—all so we can share what we love doing with an audience.

(Seriously, if non-musicians knew what we do, they’d think we’re crazy!)

But we get on stage, and things just don’t feel the same:

Our mind gets in the way. Our nerves kick in. And we don’t always play the way we want to.

As professionals, we think we should be able to “just figure it out,”

and when we can’t, we think something might be wrong with us.

we start:

  • Doubting ourselves.

  • Holding back from taking auditions, entering competitions, or breaking into a new freelance scene.

  • Focusing so much on perfection that we stop enjoying the act of making music.

Until we wake up one day—burned out & wondering where our passion and motivation went.

musicians work too hard to settle for this

i believe every musician deserves the experience of performing the way they know they’re capable of—with ease, focus, and flow.

The good news is, it’s possible.

It just takes the right training, and a little help untangling the patterns that hold us back.

I help classical musicians break the cycle of overthinking so they can get out of their own way, get into flow, and perform on stage the way they know they’re capable of in the practice room.

I used to say—only semi-jokingly—that I was the world’s biggest over-thinker.  So I know how frustrating it is when your own mind gets in the way of what you’ve worked so hard to create.

Even though I was a tenured music professor with an international solo, orchestral, and chamber music career, performing was often stressful.  Full of effort.  And always accompanied by nagging voices telling me that I could and should have done better.

I thought this was just part of being a performing musician, until I found the tools I now teach my clients.

“I now have a sure fire way to manage my struggles. While the work we do as musicians is not easy, Freedom on Stage helped me bring as much ease as possible into my musical practice—and many other aspects of life. It’s an incredible relief to work with instead of against myself”

— Juan Carlos Narvaez, flute

“I used to get in my head, but now all my practicing and performing happens with intention and ease. I perform because I love it and not because I have an expectation to uphold.”

— Mandi Bearjar, clarinet

It’s not about making your nerves go away, turning off your brain, or simply practicing more.

It’s about working with your thoughts and emotions instead of fighting against them, so you can:

  • Use your mind deliberately.

  • Regulate your nervous system.

  • Access the optimal performance state called flow.

with freedom on stage, you can:

Stop second-guessing and micromanaging, and start trusting yourself to let go and play.

Release fear and judgment, and put your focus where it should be—on making music.

Experience the liberation of performing free from intrusive thoughts, chatter and self-criticism.

Think, “Oh, good!” when you notice your pre-performance flutters—because you know it means something exciting is about to happen.

Direct the energy of your nerves into focus and excitement that fuel your performance.

Play the way you know you're capable of—and better.

Think, “Did I just do that?” when you exceed your own expectations.

Know you’re successful and capable, and that your good performances aren’t just flukes.

One of my students once said, “Performing in flow feels like playing in a dream. “

But it’s not. It’s a real, scientifically documented state that all humans—including you—are capable of experiencing.

what is flow like?

You’re so absorbed in playing that the world reduces to a floating stage, your effort feels effortless, and time feels irrelevant—before you know it, half the concert has gone by.

Fear and worry are replaced by gratitude, appreciation, and feeling fully alive.

And most importantly, being on stage feels so good, you’ll want to do it again and again.
